UWF John C. Pace Library Expansion

This expansion project of the existing John C. Pace Library doubled the size of the building to approximately 130,000 SF. The renovation/expansion included the latest state-of-the-art information retrieval and computerized cataloging. The four-story addition matches the existing structure and increased circulation patterns throughout the building.

Caldwell Associates worked very successfully with the national firm of Morris Architects on all aspects of this project. Project cost was $7,500,000.

UWF Natatorium Renovations

The project was an interior renovation of the existing Natatorium. The pool was refinished with new plaster, a new perimeter drainage/overflow system was installed, and ceramic tile was added to the pool deck. The existing shower/locker/toilet rooms were redesigned and modernized to meet the expanded role of the Natatorium and comply with accessibility requirements.

National Flight Academy

Caldwell Associates is partnering with Greenhut Construction on this design-build project for Naval Aviation Museum Foundation. This project consists of new construction 105,000 SF facility specified to be compliant with UFC force protection, offering a 6-day pilot training program for 7th-12th graders. The showcase is the simulator room which houses 36 F-18 flight simulators. Other training areas include aerodynamics, charting, night vision, spin chair, and “ready rooms” where students are given a pre-flight briefing and post-flight analysis. The building also accommodates administrative areas, a dining facility, gymnasium, lecture hall, and dormitories for 264 students and 22 flight leaders.

Estimated Construction Cost is: $16 Million.

University of West Florida College of Business

The College of Business project is an element of the Campus Master Plan for the 2007 – 2011 Cycle. The proposed project is consistent with objectives of the Master Plan. The proposed project will define and create outdoor spaces. The project combines with existing buildings to create civic space. The project incorporates multi-functional spaces suitable for future adaptation. The proposed College of Business building at the University of West Florida is a new facility of approximately 36,000 gross square feet providing dedicated program spaces for the College. These include faculty, student, and administration offices, study areas, and classrooms. The new courtyard space created by both the new building and the removal of the ramp will be designed in such a way as to increase interaction and facilitate a sense of place. The front lobby will be wrapped by a public plaza fronting the pedestrian loop road called for in the master plan. The plaza will also link with the new campus pathway down to the lower parking lot. The building is sited in such a way as to provide a threshold separating this plaza from the more intimate areas of the inner courtyard. These spaces will be populated with site furniture to encourage use by students and faculty. The building is formed of a three story bar to the west, a glass circulation corridor linking the upper and lower entries, and a curved element to the north. This curved bar wraps around Building #76 in an effort to connect the space between the new building and #76 with the new courtyard. The glass circulation corridor will be higher than the other two elements in an effort to increase the amount of daylight into this space. Although all of the elements are three stories, the slope of the site results in only two stories above grade at the main entry at the courtyard.

This project will be LEED Silver Certified. Estimated Construction Cost: $10.1 Million.

University of West Florida Child Development Center

This 10,015 SF Child Care Center will be LEED Certified. The Center for Child Development at UWF is an Educational Research Center for Child Development on the University Campus. Design included: Geothermal HVAC. Large Outdoor covered patios. Our role included entire design (schematic through construction administration) Full Architectural and Engineering Design and Construction Management.

Actual Construction Cost: $2,445,000.

University of West Florida School of Science & Engineering

This project is a new science facility for the University of West Florida’s Pensacola Campus. Caldwell Associates worked closely with Lord Aeck Sargent Architecture in Atlanta on all facets of this project. This University level building houses contemporary infrastructure to support the disciplines of computer science, electrical engineering, mathematics and statistics, physics, software engineering and others. At approximately 95,000 square feet, it includes a four-story rectangular laboratory and office wing of 57,000 square feet, and a four story circular auditorium and classroom wing of about 32,000 square feet connected together by an expansive glass atrium space.

The rectangular wing features open labs for laser technology, computer technology, digital imaging, technical shops, robotics and advising and private offices. At the south end of this wing is a see-through stairwell providing a modernist interplay between solid massing and seemingly transparent structure.

The circular wing contains amphitheatrically configured classrooms, a virtual reality center and an Internet Café. Classrooms in this wing are tiered for better visibility and contain state of the art audio-visual and telecommunications equipment.

The connecting atrium features architecturally revealed pipe truss columns, beams and diagonal lateral supports, and a continuous four-story exposed steel monumental stair with cantilevered intermediate landings. Photovoltaic panels integrated into the atrium glazing are designed to power robotics equipment.

The budget for this project is approximately $23,000,000.
